Killed Sheboygan, Wis., cyclist not to be forgotten
Sheboygan education leader and avid cyclist Troy Tousey was killed in a car-bike accident on June 7. Police reports indicated the 48-year-old Tousey was stuck by a car driven by Roger Peterson, 67, on County Trunk Y near Howard's Grove, northwest of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, at 6:45 p.m. The crash remains under investigation. Tousey is survived by his wife, Marci, and their 11-year-old twins, Hannah and Tate.
Tousey was biking with about 20 other cyclists on a Wednesday night group ride. He was in group of three riders when the accident occurred. The informal group ride has been part of the Sheboygan County bike culture since the mid-1980s. Tousey was a volunteer bicycle trainer for the Maywood Environmental Park. Most Wednesdays and Saturdays he could be found on local group rides with friends.
Tousey was a prominent leader of the charter school movement in Sheboygan County. School district officials called Tousey's death a significant loss for the community. "It's a real stunning loss for a lot of people, and it's a huge loss for Sheboygan," school board president David Gallianetti said.
Troy's brother Tim Tousey remembers Troy as a generous and modest person. "We knew Troy was involved in the charter school program, but didn't realize his impact and accomplishments," he said. "He didn't brag about that kind of stuff. But he also had this driven side to get things done."
Cycling friends honored Tousey at Saturday's Elkhart Lake Triathlon with a moment of silence before the event. Many participants wrote Troy's name on their calves next to their triathlon ID numbers.
Sheboygan cyclist Dave Nagode said he sees bike safety as one of Tousey's legacies. "Troy is a great guy who will not be forgotten. We need to remind our community that bikes have a place on the road and motorists have to be more aware."
Over 200 cyclists took part in a memorial group ride from Maywood Environmental Park to the scene of the accident. The informal Wednesday night group also held a memorial ride.
About 40 people participated in yoga memorial to honor Tousey. Tousey's widow Marci operates the Yoga Loft in Sheboygan. Many of her friends and clients walked from the Yoga Loft to North Beach where the lakeside memorial was held.
