Organizers of the 2012 Mad City 50K, held on March 31, recycled the directional signs from the 2007 Mad City 100K race. Rice director Tim "Timo" Yanacheck said he will bid for a return of the 100K U.S. Championship next year.
Mile markers within the UW Arboretum, through which Mad City 50K solo runners passed five times, honor accomplished UW-Madison runners. The five-mile marker is dedicated to Cindy Bremser, who placed fourth in the 3,000 meters at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Patrick Russell, 36, of St. Paul, Minn., was unable to defend his 2011 title but finished 2nd overall in 3:07:15 -- faster than the 3:08 course record he set last year but not faster than Zach Bitter, who won in a time of 3:03:10.
