Taking a break while walking on the shove ice. We hiked along the shore for the first few miles of outing.

This is the remains of an ice volcano. These are made by waves pushing water into the shore ice and the force blows out through the static ice, creating volcano looking structures. This one is BIG but not tall like most are. We found rocks on the surface that the waves also washed up, some looking to be 10lbs in size. These stones were found more than 20 feet above the lake.

I hope this shows the size or depth, of the shove ice. Gromit is not a very brave dog and won’t be found too close to the edge! You can’t see them but we’re wearing steel ice grips on our shoes. Could this be the arctic??

On shore, the sparrows were eating some nearby carrion.

Over the weekend is was warmish here, with lowering snow levels so we headed to the Porkies State Park to hike some trails there instead of skiing. Unsure of the conditions we’d find there we brought small snow shoes along, which were needed only after reaching the top of the summit, as the snow pack was deepest where we descended to return back to the car.
