TWO HARBORS KAYAK FESTIVAL Paddling pleasure on the North Shore The Two Harbors Kayak Festival is making a big splash this year by
expanding to Sunday and adding more events for kids and adults. The festival, held Aug. 2–4 at Two Harbors, Minn., on the North Shore of Lake Superior, will now feature:
• Youth paddling area where kids will be introduced to paddling basics. Kayaks will be provided. • Swimming area with lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturday. • Courage Duluth will be sponsoring a class for people with physical disabilities who would like to learn to paddle.
• Grab a partner for a half–mile Tandem Sprint Race. Kayaks provided. • Kids' kayak races for prizes on Saturday. • Youth kayak instruction for ages 8–16. • Rolling clinic where you will learn the C–to–C roll. • Video Feedback Clinic, a great way to refine your strokes and braces.
Don't miss the exciting Great River Energy 18–Mile Marathon, with cash prizes for the three fastest men and the three fastest women, and the fast
and furious Betty's Pies 1/4 Marathon, with prizes for the top paddler in each category. All racers receive a free T–shirt, entrance to all festival activities, and a free supper ticket. For beginner paddlers, there are one–hour tours or three–hour tours in tandem kayaks. Paddlers
must pre–register for the three hour tours, but the one–hour tours are first–come, first–serve.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced kayaker, the seminars are a great way to perfect your skills. Choose from Advanced Paddle Strokes, Deep Water Rescue, the Rolling Clinic, or Video Feedback Clinic. For only $10 for adults and $5 for children under 18, there is a wide
variety of activities to participate in. Have hours of fun on the demo beach and climbing wall, plus on–land seminars including Kayak Design, Navigational Skills, Lake Superior Trip Planning, and Risk Management Strategies. Free events for the whole family include the Wells Fargo kids' kayak races and the Rock Skipping Contest. Bring outdoor equipment you
wish to sell or donate to the Lake Superior Water Trail's "Gear Swap" on Saturday.
The festival kicks off on Friday with a wine reception for racers, sponsors, tour and clinic participants. Then Saturday morning enjoy the Two Harbors Chamber of Commerce Pancake Breakfast from 7 a.m.–11 a.m. Vendors will be on–site all day for a variety of snacks. Then wrap up with "Supper with the Paddlers" on Saturday from 5:30–8
p.m. The cost is only $7, free for children under 5 with paid race registration. Dinner tickets include registration for drawings with a grand prize of a new Perception Carolina Kayak. The public is welcome but must be present to win.
