Budget cuts hit triathlon class at UW-Madison

A popular triathlon class at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been caught in a financial transition, forcing the school to cut 29 physical education offerings.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that students and trainers object to the cut, which would take place after the spring session.

"The triathlon class is a little different in that there's such a great bonding experience between so many of those students," said Tim Gattenby, who teaches adaptive fitness and personal training. "Either through the pain and suffering I put them through, or the way I teach the class."

The class typically has a waiting list of 30, and is part of the triathlon momentum in Madison. Faculty at UW includes some of the best competitors in the Midwest, including Thomas Brunold and Joe Kurian. In addition, the school has produced Olympian Gwen Jorgensen.

  1. Big deal. Budget cuts also forced Milwaukee County to lay off 49 deputies. It happens, get over it.

  5. This would be a pure fat course. I have no problem if students want to take a triathlon class, but let them pay for it completely by themselves.

  6. Why am I, as a private buyer of medical insurance in the "free-market" supporting a bunch of fat, lazy slobs who do not exercise. I pay as much for my insurance as they do, and they are the ones using my money to subsidize their lifestyle. Why does the "free market" operate this way? Why am I supporting their fat club?

  7. Right. Any and all physical education should be banned. We should all grow up to become fat, lazy couch potatoes. No one should have to learn to take care of themselves. Most people don't. They get fat, and then expect others "in the free market" to subsidize their medical coverage. I bet those thousands and thousands I pay each year into medical insurance have bought a lot of hip replacements for people whose joints calcified from underuse. But that's OK, because that's how the market works.

  9. Why, because fitness is not a purely marketable skill or trade? Maybe we should stop subsidizing every major that's not business or falls within STEM? sorry, English, Philosophy, Phy Ed., Art, etc. departments!

  10. If anything needs to be cut.... make the cuts in the political science department. All politicians have proven themselves to be inept, corrupt and a waste of our tax dollars. Both Republicans and the Dems are a joke.
