Detroit Lakes senior skier surprises with 2nd-place finish at Minn. Nordic state championship

As expected, Lakeville North High School's Ben Saxton defended his title at the Minnesota Nordic skiing championship on Thursday. The real surprise was Jake Richards, a Detroit Lakes senior, finishing second. Richards came in 37th a year ago.

“It was just crazy,” Richards told InForum of Fargo-Moorhead. “No one had an idea on who would finish second and I had a really good day. I was super happy with how it went and everything fell into play perfectly.”

Skinnyski.com reported that on the girls side, Annie Harvieux won the freestyle race but in the classic pursuit race, Nora Gilbertson moved up from third place to claim the overall girls' title.

By one point the Duluth East girls edged out Wayzata, and the Roseville boys, who entered the championship meet ranked number 1, took the trophy over Hopkins.

  1. Thanks for the ink on MN state Nordic champs. Anyone who followed the MN high school scene including Jr Olympics this year knew the 2-10 spots were mostly wide open. You could have those 2-9 skiers race 5 times on different courses and the results would probably be different each time so it wasn't too surprising. Richards also had an advantage being able to ski on natural snow daily from the middle November with adequate snow coverage in nw MN. and some of the best skiing conditions in the state this season.
