With all the Hail Marys I witnessed as a Badger and Packer fan, I deserved to connect on one myself.
Putting some faith in the trail reports from the Greenbush area near Plymouth, I lined up in a drive north formation Sunday afternoon for a desperately needed Birkie training session.
Surveying the trail, I saw that just enough snow fell last week to provide cover for skate skiers; a classic guy like me needed to improvise.
What’s the call for kick wax to work in a light dusting of fresh snow over a thin, icy base, with no tracks? I went with a thin layer of Swix green klister covered with a blue hard wax. In other words - I made it up - and scored: a combination as successful as Eli Manning to Hakeem Nicks.
Given the conditions, and the limited time, I skipped the long ski and heaved for the hills; repeats on the steep climbs on the green loop.
The lack of tracks didn’t matter, and I got in an intense workout, worthy of some kind of end zone celebration.
Conditions at Greenbush should be solid through the week, especially if another inch or two arrives later today. Reports say the Zillmer Trails also are skiable and the man-made loop at Lapham is still a busy place for folks getting in those last pre-Birkie workouts.
