Milwaukee Public Market adds covered bike parking

The Milwaukee Public Market will start catering more to bicyclists, with a sheltered parking area along North Broadway.

Some of the initial work has started, including the installation of a roof on the east side of the market building.

On Tuesday, the Milwaukee Common Council unanimously approved the proposal to use a portion of the sidewalk on Broadway for the racks that will accommodate two-dozen bikes.

David Ware, the facility manager for the public market, said the enthusiasm for biking in the area had prompted the addition.

A temporary repair shop proved popular last year as part of the outdoor market, and the nearby Café Benelux has been a popular stop for people pedaling two wheels. The expanded bike parking will make the market more attractive for those biking customers, Ware said.

Bike racks will be installed under the shelter attached to the Milwaukee Public Market.

We need a bike shop somewhere downtown. There is no place to get a flat fixed, for example, and that is quite a shame, since the nearest place must be at least a mile in any direction. Would be a nice thing to have in conjunction with a messenger service / coffee shop.

I often commute to the Public Market via bike. Despite my many trips, I still occasionally forget that there is ample bike parking on the north side of the market in the car parking lot. Instead, I wander about a bit before I think "duh", its' on the other side. This is because bike parking should be intuitive and obvious. In the case of the market, this means proximity to entrances and visibility. I am thrilled to see the market (and anyone) embracing more bike amenities and working to encourage bike traffic. That said, the east side is not exactly optimal. I would have delighted in a bike corral, like those outside Alterra Prospect or the Nomad. Why don't we dedicate just one car spot for more than a dozen bikes - and put it right by the market entrance? I know, car blasphemy. Anyway, while the east side of the market building does not strike me as significantly better than what already exists on the north side, I'll take it. Its a step in the right direction. Evidence shows that providing infrastructure does stimulate more use. Can't wait to check it out. Thanks Public Market!

Fabulous! I bike regularly downtown, and covered biking where I don't need to bike through the MPM parking lot and risk my life will really make me feel welcome! Last time I navigated the parking lot for the bike racks, I was thinking that an urban shopping area like MPM should have better bike accommodations. Thanks for the improvements!
