A heartfelt video produced on the road and on the fly earned Glenn Keller a slot on CNN’s 2012 Fit National Triathlon Challenge Team.
One of seven selected to train under the guidance of Sanjay Gupta, Keller will prepare for the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. Like his teammates, Keller signed on in an act of desperation to overcome his weight issues (he estimates he carries 100 pounds too many) and rebuild an active life.
The truck driver works as a contractor for Roadrunner Transportation Services, based in Cudahy.
‘I knew I needed a change, I just didn't know how I was going to accomplish it," Keller wrote. "Then I found out about the Tri Challenge and something about seeing what others were able to accomplish motivated me to send in my video. I think I got it in four hours before the deadline.
“I was on my way back to Texas and didn't have a webcam. I pulled off the interstate, went into a Walmart and bought what I figured would be my last bucket of chicken wings and a webcam," he said. "I sat there in the seat of my truck and just tried to speak from my heart."
As part of the CNN triathlon team, Keller will be given a road bike and all of its accessories, a wet suit, and a gym membership. He and the others will blog, Tweet, and share their workouts, from now until race day in mid-September, on Facebook.
