Eau Claire city officials consider ordinance requiring bike racks

cycling

Bike racks would be required as part of the parking plans for new buildings in Eau Claire, under an ordinance proposed by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission.

As detailed in the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, the committee will consider a standard of one bike spot per every 10 vehicle parking stalls for multifamily housing, rooming houses, commercial and industrial businesses, schools and hospitals.

Similar policies are in place in Madison, La Crosse and Minneapolis.

  1. Foolish law, infringes on our liberty. Should be up to the owner to decide if they want a bike rack or not.

  3. Izzatso - Are you advocating for the elimination of all zoning laws and building requirements - height, design, parking stalls for vehicles, etc.? Not trying to be argumentative, just looking for clarification. Tom

  4. Tom, are you saying that property should now be zoned for bike racks? I'm all for reasonable zoning and building standards, but a bike rack law is way out beyond the fringe and flat out silly.

  5. I say all Eau Claire citizens be given free bikes! (Paid for, of course, by all those making over $200,000.) Also, is it time to ask if Trek has made appropriate political donations?

  6. Izzatso - I think your point has merit. There are requirements, though, that dictate the number of parking spaces that businesses etc. are required to have. What's your take on those?
