Hoan Bridge

I've long been torn on the merits of a bike lane on the Hoan Memorial Bridge, wrestling to weigh the cost, usage and potential for more return on investment in paths on city streets.

This morning, though, on a run south of the bridge, I looked at the the blue span and arches in a light snow, with the skyline reflecting the early sun, and thought: "Damn it would be great to run across that thing right now."

  1. I would think all the people who would like a bike/running lane on the Hoan could donate to a fund to get it built.

    At least then we could gauge the actual interest in having this thing built. My guess is it's got a lot of interest in being built with money from people who will never use it, but little interest of donation from the few people who would.

  2. This seems about as stupid as running trains thru the downtown area, which by the way seems to be under road work projects all the time. Use the money in a more practical way this is not a needed project, it benefits only a few, and of the bike riders in Milwaukee who in their right mind would want to ride that stretch when it is windy?? Forgot to mention the stink from the waste management facility. Riders should use the 6th street bridge, it too is nice and much flatter, and gets you to the south side.

  4. Get a grip and get a clue. This was the most stupid idea in a long time. The fact that it was debated for weeks is kind of frightening. This would be the last item on my priority list, and I am an avid biker.

    Us the hundreds of miles of beautiful trails and thousands of miles of roads to bike.

  7. Here's another idea for all you haters. Why don't we charge drivers the actual costs of the roads they drive on. And don't get me started on what gas would cost of you rolled in the actual cost of acquisition including what we pay in taxes to keep our military presence in the Middle East. You guys don't want to spend a nickel unless it's spent on you and then you can't spend our tax dollars fast enough.

  8. It is to laugh. And this project wasn't about spending a ton of money on a few? Gas autos shouldn't even still exist. I want my tax dollars spent on the best for society: health insurance for everyone (so poor people don't have to wait until they are sick enough for the emergency room), and a good education for our kids. You know, things that benefit society as a whole. This project was elitism disguised as green.

  12. It would have been cool, but I think all of us who were in support of it knew it was a VERY long shot that it would happen. I still would like to see a "bridge day" or something similar, like they have in WV, MI, and other locations with biking, walking, running, rappelling, and other activities...bikes on one side, peds on the other...a Hoan century. Open the bridge to folks for a day, charge an admission with proceeeds going to bike/ped inprovements, special olympics, or something of that nature.
