Sen. Larson set to present petitions supporting Hoan Bridge bike path

cycling, hoan bridge

State Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee) plans to beat the deadline for commenting on the proposals for a bike and pedestrian lane on the Hoan Bridge and deliver petitions with 5,000 signatures Tuesday afternoon.

Larson will present the show of support to the Wisconsin Department of Transporation officials gathering input on the bike lane alternatives presented last month. Ranging in cost from $9.5 million to $95.5 million, the alternatives are being reviewed as part of the planning for a large-scale rehabilitation of the bridge connecting bike paths in Bay View and downtown Milwaukee.

The deadline for submitting comments to the DOT is 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Comments should be directed to Carolynn Gellings, WisDOT Project Manager carolynn.gellings@dot.wi.gov.

  1. 3 MILLION people went to Miller Park this year. 3 HUNDRED might use the bike lane. oOu seem to have no problem spending other people's money on your own fantasy. Must be a liberal.

  2. What you are witnessing is a handful of business owners cavingin to pressure. Unless you find out how many refused to endorse the plan you can draw no conclusion from the list of 40. I doubt the 40 CEO's are even aware of the issue. Some underling typically responds to those requests. Don't be so naive.

  3. One more thing. Conservatices don't like to waste taxpayer money so why would you expect them to be in favor? Liverals love to spend taxpayer money so why would you expect the to be opposed. Both are ideologically consistent.

  4. Well said "Mr. FreeMarketMan", I'm sure that Bud Selig and George W Bush (who also got a new stadium for his Texas Rangers prior to selling them) would both agree with you ;-)

I would have expected you, "Mr. FreeMarketMan" to say that the 3 million people should have paid for their own stadium?

I guess my expectations were too high....

  5. True insanity! What next? Bike lane on I-94? Wahoo! 5,000 signatures. If they want it, they should pay for it!

    And Larson should be recalled!

  6. There are plenty of other bike paths where you can get your exercise. It doesn't have to be on a windy, expressway bridge.

  7. Your assertion that "you haven't done your homework on the subject." All you have to do is drive on the bridge with your car to know how windy it is up there. A huge expense for little benefit. Bikes don't belong on expressways. But if you want it, YOU should pay for it, not the tax payers.

  8. You are right!

There are plenty of bike paths on the north side and on the south side of the Daniel Hoan Memorial bridge and a bike path connecting them will allow people easy access to both of those beautiful bike paths!

It will be a great connector for the Oak Leaf Trail!

  9. There are no words for true idiocy. You are not going to get Oak Leaf trail riders to ride up on a windy Hoan bridge. Aside from that, people would have more enjoyment riding along the lake, not on the expressway. Liberal pie in the sky idea. Pure nonsense.

  10. I would beg to differ with you eparadow, people have been going up on the Daniel Webster Hoan Memorial bridge for over 35 years and actually, they were going up there before cars and trucks were allowed up there.

I know, I was one of them :-)
I still remember my first walk up there in 1976!

I'm sure once the pedestrian/bicycle bridge is complete,
you will change your mind and agree with me that it's a very beautiful walk and ride and we are lucky to have a venue to add such a beautiful walk/ride for pedestrians and bicyclists!

It will be a such treasure that people will wonder how there ever could have been a controversy over building access for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Much like the controversy over building and using the original bridge.

  11. Here is a short url (link) for that Milwaukee Sentinal article from April 17th, 1976.

  12. Any who favor the Hoan Bike/Pedestrian path should not be sidetracked by the ancillary objections that their opponents trot out to justify their basic objection. I believe, from going to meetings and reading these comments, that the vast majority of them don't really care if the Hoan path would be safer than the current route that connects the bike paths on either side of it. They have no idea or don't care how many people would use it. They don't care how much of the year it could be used practically. They don't care if it brought tourist dollars into the state.

They just don't want any tax money spent on anything that they believe doesn't affect them personally. The government exists to enhance their lives or the lives they have chosen to care about. The Devil can take the rest.

If any one here actually cares about safety, the actual conditions on the bridge, the safety record of similar bridges (and there are quite a few), or other evidence let me know. Otherwise, we get it. You don't want your tax money spent on it. Well, I (who does also drive a car and pays taxes) do want the money spent on this project. And just to assure people that my support is simply because it's bike related, I have opposed and criticised other bike projects that didn't make sense.

  13. Sorry, the "is" in the last sentence should be "isn't".
