Sen. Larson set to present petitions supporting Hoan Bridge bike path

State Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee) plans to beat the deadline for commenting on the proposals for a bike and pedestrian lane on the Hoan Bridge and deliver petitions with 5,000 signatures Tuesday afternoon.

Larson will present the show of support to the Wisconsin Department of Transporation officials gathering input on the bike lane alternatives presented last month. Ranging in cost from $9.5 million to $95.5 million, the alternatives are being reviewed as part of the planning for a large-scale rehabilitation of the bridge connecting bike paths in Bay View and downtown Milwaukee.

The deadline for submitting comments to the DOT is 5 p.m. Wednesday.

  1. @36miles Yes it is. Just like I-94 in Wisconsin that has a bike trail on it today (http://www.insidemilwaukee.com/Article/11292011-TheManyOpinionsofSupervisorEyonBiddle)! And the I-90 bridge in Seattle has a bike trail on it.

  3. State Sen. Chris Larson is this a pressing issue facing Wisconsin??? I think you in Madison need to address how you waste millions. I'm a cyclist and even I think this is stupid. Please do something of value to justify your bloated salary.

  4. The comments once again cause me to wonder about the liberal vs. conservative divide over bicycling infrastructure. It's especially puzzling given the list of 40 local business leaders who signed on as supporters of a bike lane on the Hoan. The list includes the CEOs or COOs of Rockwell Automation, Guaranty Association Management, Johnson Controls, Robert W. Baird & Co., Mandel Group, Pierce Engineering, Milwaukee World Festival Inc., and VISIT Milwaukee. I could be wrong, but this group doesn't strike me as a bunch of greedy liberals.

  5. How much is the cost per mile/user for the bike lane? Don't they figure out the bridge value based on cars per dollar or miles per dollar? How much does it cost for a bike to traverse the bridge? How much if you amortize it over summer versus winter. $5k per bike in the winter?

  7. Thanks for the info, Dave. Is there a design picture somewhere? I am interested to see how the big traffic would be separated from automobile traffic. Just sounds to me like a terribly unsafe idea for not motorized traffic on a controlled access roadway.

  9. No, rsimms, that is not how the DOT calculates the value of the bridge, or the cost of the rehabilitation. Instead, they look at what it will cost to make the repairs, and add the bike lane.

  10. Really? This is the issue Larson wants to champion? For 95 million we can repave quite a few side roads. Instead he wants to waste that money on a bike path that few will use and can only use 6 months out of the year anyhow. Where do Democrats get their priorities? The lack of total common sense is staggering. Shame on voters for electing morons like this who just throw our hard earned money down the toilet for the special interests of a few. If he steals this money from us I'd like to see him be the first to pedal up the hill to the bridge.

  11. 36miles this link takes you to the feasibility study with the five alternatives http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/seregion/794hoan/reports.htm#feas The one getting the most attention has a concrete barrier 42 inches high separating the outer median from the bike lane. The fence on the outside would be nine feet high.

  12. I have paid much more in taxes for Miller Park which just helped Bud Selig and his family sell the Milwaukee Brewers for a tidier sum than they would have gotten without Miller Park.

    I will receive a much greater return of my tax money from a pedestrian/bicycle path over the Daniel Hoan bridge than I ever will from Miller Park.

    JUST DO IT!

    At least the tax money will be spent on a real sport where people are getting some exercise!
