Larson ride for bike path on Hoan Bridge has been cancelled

cycling, Hoan Bridge

Organizers have cancelled the bike ride today due to the incident on the Hoan Bridge this morning.

From the JSonline Newswatch: Investigators are trying to determine whether a person jumped from the Hoan Bridge or whether the person was knocked from the bridge after a collision with a vehicle.

Sheriff's deputies are receiving conflicting stories from drivers who called from I-794, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Fran McLaughlin said. Some witnesses said they believe a person was struck while attending to a disabled vehicle on the bridge. McLaughlin notes that witnesses have been incorrect in their accounts after seeing people fall from the bridge.

The abandoned vehicle is just south of Lincoln Memorial Drive, according to traffic cameras. Sheriff's deputies received initial reports of a disabled vehicle about 7:20 a.m.

Below is the story on the ride.

State Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee) will lead other elected officials and cycling advocates on a bike ride Tuesday to show the importance of a bike and pedestrian path on the Daniel Hoan Memorial Bridge.

The group will gather in Humboldt Park at noon, then take city streets to the Discovery World Museum. Riding the surface streets is intended to show how a path on the bridge would be a safer alternative for bikers connecting between the south side and Downtown.

Officials from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are examining the feasibility of adding a bike and walking lane to the Hoan, during a major renovation slated to begin in 2013. A consultant hired by the state is preparing a report on the cost and logistics. That review is expected to be finished later this fall.
