Wausau tourism group interested in Badger State Games

The executive director of the Wausau Central Wisconsin Convention & Visitors Bureau said Friday that his group plans to enter into negotiations with the Wisconsin Sports Development Corp., to purchase the rights to the Badger State Games.

The Madison-based corporation said last month that it was ending the Badger State Games.

Darien Schaefer, the head of the Wausau group, said his group had interest in the winter games portion of the Badger State Games, and would be open to contracting with another community to stage summer games.

Schaefer said he had no idea what it would cost to buy the rights to the games, but said the games had value.

"There's a ramp-up in investment that would be needed," Schaefer said Friday.

Schaefer said his group had created the Sports Authority, an arm of the convention bureau, that could potentially operate the Badger State Games.

  1. Perfect opportunity for someone the Milwaukee area to jump on board and bring the Summer games here. Plenty of locations throught the metro area to host them. In any case, I really hope the Badger State games don't end, regardless of where they end up. The Dells would also be another great location for the Summer games.

  2. Just speaking from my experience in the Nordic skiing races, this event was much better run in the early days when the locals were responsible. True, they had a run of four years with terrible weather but other events survived and thrived since then. I just think that attendance declined due to how poorly the games were run.

Again, just speaking about Nordic, they'll have some challenges restarting the games now since other events have stepped up to fill in the scheduling gap.

  3. Didn't this same group essentially drive a stake through the Winter Games heart by dropping sponsorship? And now they want to take it over altogether. As a Winter Games Nordic skier I would be thrilled to see it resurrected, but it does seem strange that after essentially killing the games, they now find it of "value" to try and get ownership.
