Marking the upgrades to Oak Leaf, Interurban and Zillmer Trails
Local cyclist and skier Mike Healy has been busy of late documenting the latest enhancements to his recreational pursuits.
Either that, or he just wants to make me jealous with pictures of his adventures.
First up is the new extension on the Interurban Trail, connecting Brown Deer Park to the trailhead at Brown Deer Rd. and Deerbrook Trail (behind the Audi dealership). The paving on the 1.2-mile extension was completed earlier this month, and the signage and landscaping is in the works. The project cost roughly $1 million, according to Nate Piotrowski, community development director in Brown Deer.
It is part of the long-range plan to connect the Interurban Trail with the Oak Leaf Trail, and create an off-road path from the Milwaukee Lakefront to Port Washington and points north.

Next up is the underpass on the Oak Leaf Trail in the Underwood Creek Parkway. The improvement allows cyclists to avoid playing frogger with vehicles on Blue Mound Rd. The underpass was part of the reconstruction work on the major street in Wauwatosa.
Cyclists have been pleased with the route enhancement, which makes that portion of the Oak Leaf much safer. The underpass opened last month. (No surprise that Healy has been way ahead of me).
In this case under is better than over.
In the third leg of his reporting triathlon, Healy checked out the new shelter for skiers on the Zillmer Trails in the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest. Built as a lasting memorial to dedicated volunteer Michael Krueger, the warming shelter will be a welcome addition for skiers. The building will be open for the start of the Nordic season.
Better book ahead. This place will be busy when the snow flies.
