Cycling fatalities through August match 2009 total

Two more bicyclists have been added to the list of those killed in crashes on Wisconsin roads, and the total for the year now matches the nine fatalities recorded in all of 2010.

Five of the cyclists killed in 2011 were struck from behind by motor vehicles. In the other four fatalities, the cyclists biked into the paths of cars, according to police reports.

The most recent fatal crash occurred on Aug. 19, in Kenosha.

Wayne Bricco, a 50-year-old electrician and handy man was headed southbound on 24th Ave. and crossed 60th St. into the path of a westbound car. He died the next day.

Roughly a month earlier in Milwaukee, Ell Nealy Jr., 56, turned into the path of a car while bicycling westbound in the 2200 block of W. National Ave. He was within a couple blocks of his home. Nealy suffered head injuries, and died on Aug. 2.

All of the bicycling fatalities in the state this year occurred after July 1.

Through August of 2010, the state Department of Transportation had recorded five cyclist deaths.

Joel Patenaude, the editor of Silent Sports Magazine, discusses the recent fatalities and his own close call in his column for the September issue. Patenaude also recommends Dave Schlabowske's recent post calling for more safety on the roads.

  1. I agree with you about the safety gear. The one thing that people never seem to mention is a mirror, you can mount them on your helmet or handle bars. I don't know if this would prevent the "hit from behind" accidents or not. Been using one for the last 30 years and it sure is nice to know what is happening behind you when you hear a car approaching from behind you and you can see how close they are.

  3. But I will say that I wouldn't intentionally hold up traffic, I'm just sayin that if you're driving on a country road and you encounter riders two abreast, give em a chance to single up, or pass safely. We'll let you by if we know you're there...

  4. I can't speak for the UK but the drivers are better in Germany because the licensing tests are more stringent. They take it much more seriously there.

  5. I'm sure you exceed the speed limit in your car and roll through stop signs without expecting to get pulled over. What's your point? Please give me a list of what laws can be bent or broken and by whom just so I can keep it straight your highness.

  6. That's not a very pc thing to say but I can't believe how many women I see texting while driving. That's not to say I don't see tons of men talking on phones while driving but for that, at least your eyes are always on the road.

  7. Interesting driving sometimes. Since it's illegal to cross double lines in a divided highway sometimes it's close to cyclists personally I wouldn't take the risk on a road like that then cyclists get upset do yOu cross the double lines illegally or cater to to the cyclist ?

  9. Migh be but still isn't smart a couple years back I passed 2 that were abreast had to cross over a double solid line I got a ticket for crossing lines. Laws dont always cover common sense or plain stupidty/courtsey.

  10. I stopped riding my bike on the streets a few years ago when I realized I was a target and nothing more. I watched folks approaching ( in my mirror ) without any regard at all for my safety. Combined with drunks dopers and texters I figured I am safest to not ride at all.

  11. Riding two abreast might be legal, but not very smart in some locations. And if you're riding on a road with a 55 mph limit with blind spots in the road, then you are asking to get hit. Sad, but true.

    I almost got a bicyclist this morning when he popped out from behind a moving truck crossing the street. He then had the gall to start yelling at me to slow down. My speed at the time, about 5mph as I was stopping at the stop sign. Had I been 10 feet closer to the stop sign, this idiot would have hit the front quarter of my vehicle. I told this bonehead that next time he's on the sidewalk, he should follow the law and WALK his bike across the street.

  13. How about just obeying vehicle laws. That is what bicyclists are supposed to do anyway. It seems like a lot of them don't believe that though.

  14. Riding two abreast is only legal when there are two lanes going in that direction. Law also states that cyclists where there is one lane, must move over
