Police share details in fatal crash in Fond du Lac

cycling, fatalities

A 62-year-old man died over the weekend after a cycling crash on a busy street in Fond du Lac.

The cyclist, Daniel Cady, crossed into the path of a Lincoln LS traveling eastbound on W. Johson St., according to Police Capt. Steve Klein. Cady was traveling southbound, from the entry to the Forest Mall toward the Forest Plaza and the McDonald's Restaurant.

There are no traffic signals at the crossing, but traffic exiting the mall is regulated by a stop sign, Klein said. No citations or charges are expected to be issued.

Cady was riding a Roadmaster bike, and not wearing a helmet.

He is the seventh cyclist killed this year in a collision with a motor vehicle in Wisconsin. All of the fatal crashes occurred since July 1.

"Law abiding citizens who happen to drive Automobiles"? So you have never sped, talked on your cell phone, rolled thru a stop sign, or texted while driving? All of which are illegal to do.

Furthermore, have you been in more "near miss accidents" with cyclists or with other drivers?

My bicycle is licensed. I believe that licensing of one's bicycle is mandatory for City of Milwaukee residents.

  5. I just drank some soy milk for lunch, and I'm about ready to eat some gluten free, whole grain bread, with some spring green mix with organic salad dressing. I'm gonna put on my spandex, and go yell at the people at McDonald's off of Bluemound Road in Brookfield, I'm allowed to ride on Bluemound right? I have equal rights to the road do I not?

  6. I think that trolling the comment sections on these cyclist tragedies is really pretty low. It's a shame that JSO will probably have to disable commenting, especially after we get some worthwhile comments, like eyewitness accounts and facts on rules of the road.

  7. Bicycle licenses are no longer required in the City of Milwaukee.

…………………. The issue I have is that many non-bicycling car drivers just have an axe to grind with bicyclists. I don't know if it's because they are slow and the car drivers have to go around them, or if it's sheer envy at the fact that car drivers wish they had more motivation and physical strength to commute by bicycle. Or maybe they just hate the fact that we don't burn oil pollute the air with toxic, noxious emissions. Whatever it is, some car drivers just have it in for cyclists. It is actually kind of political. I'll bet many of these people who complain about cyclists probably vote Republican._____________

What a self-righteous, holier than thou load. I am a biker as well. The first part of your post was spot on and I fit that description as well. You should have just stopped there. But NOOOOO, you have to show people how superior you are. The last part of the post is the embarrassing sort of stuff that ticks off non-bikers. YOU are not better than non-bikers, bikers are NOT the only ones interested in fitness. Bikers are NOT the only ones who care about the environment. You Krazy are an elitist snob.

  9. For all of you (motor vehicle drivers) who complain about bicyclists breaking the law: Do you come to a complete stop at every stop sign? Do you use your blinker every time? And most important, ever go over the posted speed limit? I'm sure you have so you are breaking the law probably every time you go out on the road. And who do you endanger? Mostly others and not yourself.

  10. If people are actually in trying to get an understanding of the FACTS I
suggest you open a new tab in your web browser and navigate to Google
maps. Search for 806 West Johnson Street in FDL and click on Street
View. Then you can get a 360 degree view of the uncontrolled
    intersection.

There are 3 lanes of traffic in each direction plus a left turn lane.

From Bucknged's account traffic was slowing and the driver that struck
the cyclist pulled right to pass a truck. As a result, they were likely
screened from from seeing the cyclist.

Without knowing any additional facts the law may be a bit hazy here.
Statue 306.8 states "The operator of a vehicle may overtake and pass
another vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting such
movement in safety ". Given the fact that the truck was slowing and the
passing car then struck and killed someone it is reasonable to infer that
they were not passing "in safety".

However, we do not know when the cyclist entered the intersection or if
they were riding lawfully. Given the fact that the truck driver was slowing
and did NOT hit the cyclist in can be inferred that the cyclist was
crossing the intersection in a reasonable manner.

But this is based on a LOT of assumptions. The key witness is the truck
driver. If they saw the cyclist, slowed and were able to avoid a collision
then the car that passed on the right and struck the cyclist is in the
wrong. If the truck was simply fortunate to not hit a cyclist who was
riding against the law then it is the cyclists fault.

  11. I had a near miss yesterday with a motorist while riding on a quiet road. He turned left in front of me when I was about 15 feet from his car - I locked up my front and rear tires and then proceeded to flip over my bike and land about 2 feet from his car as he was turning. He never stopped to see if I was okay even though he heard me screaming at him as I was falling off my bike. Luckily I escaped with minor cuts and bruises. Bikers never come out on top of an encounter with a car.

I understand the the frustration by both cyclists and motorists. Both have
legitimate beefs regarding the behavior of a segment of the other.

But it would be a LOT more constructive if we all used these tragedies to
make sure hat we learned something and made the roads a bit safer for
    everyone.

Maybe then the lives of the cyclist, the car driver, their respective
families and Buckneged's 6 year old son won't have their lives changed.
