Police share details in fatal crash in Fond du Lac

A 62-year-old man died over the weekend after a cycling crash on a busy street in Fond du Lac.

The cyclist, Daniel Cady, crossed into the path of a Lincoln LS traveling eastbound on W. Johson St., according to Police Capt. Steve Klein. Cady was traveling southbound, from the entry to the Forest Mall toward the Forest Plaza and the McDonald's Restaurant.

There are no traffic signals at the crossing, but traffic exiting the mall is regulated by a stop sign, Klein said. No citations or charges are expected to be issued.

Cady was riding a Roadmaster bike, and not wearing a helmet.

He is the seventh cyclist killed this year in a collision with a motor vehicle in Wisconsin. All of the fatal crashes occurred since July 1.

  1. No Charges or Citations were or are going to be issued to the Auto Driver! People on Bicycles need to get off of roads, and onto one of the many bike trails that this state built for them. They whined to get the State to build them bike trails, and the majority of them don't use them.

  2. BDWIRunner - the police captain described the scenario somewhat differently - no indication the driver changed lanes prior to the impact. I have a request in for the crash report, though, and that hopefully will provide additional detail.
    Finally - I would ask once again that commenters remember someone died in this incident. Show some respect for him and integrity for yourselves.

  3. At least thru the majority of Winter, I won't have to see a bicyclist on the roads. Unless they put chains on their bicycle tires, but that will be the next in- thing for bicycle riders, let's go out riding on snow and ice.

    Then if and when you get hit by BREAKING THE LAW, don't expect any sympathy. I hate it when bicyclists and motorcyclists break laws just because they are small enough and stupid enough to do so, with the risk of someone striking them dead with their car.

  5. Regardless of who's at fault, someone has died.

    WisDOT guidelines and laws explicitly state that bicycles are legitimate vehicles which belong on the road, and are in most cases illegal on sidewalks. If you drive and don't like this, too bad - if you hit someone breaking these rules, it's probably going to be your fault. Further, WisDOT says that bikers should take over the full lane when it is narrow or they otherwise feel unsafe sharing a lane with passing traffic. Bikers should be 3 feet from the curb and/or parked cars, and traffic should pass 3 feet away from them.

    Motorist reminders:
    *Bicycles are vehicles. They belong on the road.
    *Cyclists need room to get around potholes, sewer grates and other obstructions.
    *Leave at least three feet when passing bicycles, more room at higher speeds.

  6. Sounds to me like another bicyclist who doesn't use the bike trails that this state offer's! And BTW, those are great reminders, but you probably don't follow traffic laws when your on your Trek.

  7. I am from FDL, and that street is NO PLACE for a bicyclist. He might as well had a sign on him saying hit me. For years, that quarter mile stretch of Johnson St has been a death trap for cars. Traffic lights may not solve the problem, but it will at least help.

    My comments were based on Buckneged's description of events above. The
    report in the FDL Reporter is pretty sketchy.

    But you are right - I am making assumptions as much as the next person. I
    should practice what I preach.

    I use the bike trails. The trouble is there aren't enough of them to get me where I want to go, so I also use the roads to bike.
    However, I am very particular about the safety of the roads I bike on and do my best to dress in highly visible colors. I also alsmost always obey traffic laws whether driving or biking.
    Why do I bike? Gas is expensive, I need the exercise and enjoy being outdoors moving quietly enough to see & hear some really cool things.

  12. I doubt very much that people are intentionally going out and striking bicycle drivers and other things. Problem is when there is a collision between a motorists and a bicyclist the bicyclist will lose everytime no matter who is in the right. Most of the posts here are not in the factual realm here. We have heard from a person who was there and apparently the bicyclist entered the roadway from a private drive and failed to yield the right of way to traffic on the roadway. Traffic laws if obeyed by all sharing our highways would cut our traffic fatalities to almost nothing.

    And please, unless you are a person trained in the application of Wisconsin traffic laws don't quote stuff that does not apply (serena J).

    A person has tragically lost their life. There is something to be learned from that death so others may not suffer the same fate. Learn by it please or that person has lost their life in vain. Condolences to the friends and family of the deceased as well as the traumatized driver that struck the unfortunate person.
