Police share details in fatal crash in Fond du Lac

cycling, fatalities

A 62-year-old man died over the weekend after a cycling crash on a busy street in Fond du Lac.

The cyclist, Daniel Cady, crossed into the path of a Lincoln LS traveling eastbound on W. Johson St., according to Police Capt. Steve Klein. Cady was traveling southbound, from the entry to the Forest Mall toward the Forest Plaza and the McDonald's Restaurant.

There are no traffic signals at the crossing, but traffic exiting the mall is regulated by a stop sign, Klein said. No citations or charges are expected to be issued.

Cady was riding a Roadmaster bike, and not wearing a helmet.

He is the seventh cyclist killed this year in a collision with a motor vehicle in Wisconsin. All of the fatal crashes occurred since July 1.

  1. ...blaming cyclists is so much fun for a certain kind of people. Cyclists
are concerned about their safety, and they suffer the physical
consequences of the accidents with vehicles (many do not involve
collisions), whether they're obeying the laws or not. Cyclists are a certain
    kind of people.

  2. All this blaming everyone else for your problems is not going to solve anything. If EVERYONE were responsible for their own actions there would be far fewer "accidents." Could we all just learn from other peoples mistakes and follow the traffic laws? Please! Whether you are on a bike, car or motorcycle, slow down, pay attention, get off your phones, don't drink and drive, use signals, use your brain! Try being courteous instead of cutting someone off.

  3. BTW...Klein is a captain in the FdL Department and the above excerpt is from the Fond du Lac Reporter.

  4. SerenaJ, I'm a cyclist but I'd like to back down off your comment without
    enough information.

In an ideal defensive scenario, a motorist never drives through an area
which doesn't have full visibility across the stopping distance (e.g.
weaving around a stopped car). But, a cyclist wouldn't proceed across
traffic without being certain the right-of-way was yielded.

These scenarios are why you don't want to trust a single person slowing
down and "waving you through" -- or doing it yourself -- because you
can't control all the other traffic.

But, really, we don't have enough information here.

Totally agree with you. I know that flow of traffic well also and cannot emphasize enough that that particular place is completely horrible to traverse unless you are wrapped in metal; pedestrians (some running across traffic, of course) and bicyclists have no business in that area. Not that it isn't their right to be on the road, mind you. It is a piece of traffic in FdL that invites tragedy for the less protected.

  6. First,
    Please pause a moment,
    Someone has died,
    Families suffer.

Let's five self-righteous and itchy computer fingers a bit of a rest.

    Now,

Question (not why) but HOW can we make the roadways safer for our children and grandchildren.

  8. KrazyCat says "I'll bet many of these people who complain about cyclists
    probably vote Republican."

    ==============================
Do we have to make EVERYTHING political nowadays???

By the way, I logged over 25,000 miles on my bike over the last 5+ years
and I'm a big fan of Gov Walker.

  9. "EXACTLY! And while they're at it, let them license their bikes as well, then they might have a claim to equal use of the road.... "

    hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! funny.

  10. LGRepb - I just don't get you. You want bicyclists to have to license so they can use the road? Please explain why? The reasons cars have to be registered is to pay for repairing the roads and damaging the environment - neither of which cyclists do.

And while you are at it - are you going to make people who jog and walk their dogs along roads be licensed too? And I'm sure you'll be right back here posting complaints about big government and wasteful spending when all the funding is proposed to pay for a new state department established to do all this registering and licensing.

  11. PrettyBird32 "And most people on bicycle's (sic) leave out pertinent details, such as why they break traffic laws all the time."

    How's this for a start?

I violate a specific traffic law (actually more of a pedestrian law) on a nearly daily basis. Despite having the right-of-way, I have nearly been run down several times on the roundabout on 6th and Virginia. I finally gave up trying to assert my rights and now bicycle through that area on the sidewalk. (Apparently, some automobile drivers think that a YIELD sign means nothing.) I believe that riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, within the City of Milwaukee, is illegal for those who are over a certain age and not disabled.

Incidentally, on nearly a weekly basis, I see at least one automobile driver get tired of waiting for the stoplight on 6th and Virginia--they eventually run the red light.
