Streaking runner marks 30 years with 30 laps

running

John Chandler fretted that his plans to run 30 laps on the Whitefish Bay track Tuesday night would jinx his streak, something akin to talking about a no-hitter in progress or printing playoff tickets in advance.

His celebratory side took over, however, and the financial planner has invited guests to join him as he marks 30 years of continuous running - at least one mile a day for 10,958 days. His streak ranks 52nd on the list of active streaks recognized by the United States Running Streak Association Inc.

As Lee Bergquist reported the day he hit 10,000, Chandler has laced 'em up despite bouts of patellar tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, a bad back, turf toe, a cracked rib, broken scapula, strained intercostal muscles, surgery to remove kidney stones and a broken ankle.

Then there was this business of a transient ischemic attack - a mini-stroke - and a warning that a full stroke might eventually follow, in 2003.

Bergquist reported then that Chandler runs because he loves it. He ran at Brookfield Central and at Lawrence University and never drifted away from the sport.

Each mile is a celebration, and he expects to enjoy about 7 1/2 of them this evening. Guests are encouraged to join him on the track, 1200 E. Fairmount Ave., in Whitefish Bay, at 6:30.

  1. another word, other than "streaking", should have been used to descibe what this guy does

  3. With all those injuries and heart problems, I think I'll try another hobby.

  4. I must not have read the headline close enough, or my mind is always
coming close to the gutter. I thought it was about a streaker who actually
had streaked for 30 years and was going to run 30 laps naked! I guess you
had to be around in the 70's when streaking was "popular". A bit
disappointed to read and learn the actual story. Still, way to go. An
amazing accomplishment with or without clothes.

  5. Wow....the headline writer likely never suspected that HIS handiwork would be the focal point of so many comments.
Those of you who feel misled by the headline vs. the story, would it make you feel any better if you knew that I was, indeed, a "Streaker" back in the day, when that fad even made the cover of Time magazine? Well, I was, but that's a different story . . .
    As for now . . . well . . . I gotta run . . .
    Cheers!

  7. Kudos for his determination and consistency. He sounds like someone you can count on, no matter what. He is out there rain, shine, TIA or broken ankle. That's what we need in our government; someone you can set your watch to. What the heck, I say Chandler for President 2012! (and no, I am not a friend or relative, never heard of him before today). Keep running John, stay safe and healthy!
