Bike crash sidelines Fox 6 sportscaster Jen Lada

cycling

Local sportscaster Jen Lada broke her clavicle in a bike crash on Saturday and will be sidelined from her TV duties short-term and her triathlon pursuits for at least six to eight weeks.

“It was the most serious thing I’ve ever experienced and easily the most painful,” said Lada, who anchors the sports news at WITI-TV (Channel 6). “It really shook me, and these nightmares I’m having make it difficult to think about getting back on the bike.”

Lada reports that she was riding south on the Oak Leaf Trail near North Ave., passed a pair of riders on a tandem, then took a look back to check the gap. Her front wheel caught the gravel just off the trail and she flew off the bike and into the path of the tandem, which rolled over her.

“I honestly thought my insides had been squished,” she said.

Lada’s helmet was “beat to hell,” indicating that she hit her head at some point in the fall.

“I know people get feisty about being told what to do, but I still say ‘wear your helmet,’” she said.

Emergency medical technicians carried her off the trail and an exam at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital revealed the broken clavicle near her right shoulder, plus nasty road rash on her right arm and back.

Lada said she will return to the sports desk when her back spasms subside.

An athlete since childhood, the Marquette University grad has competed in numerous triathlons, the Chicago Marathon and several half marathons.

  2. Glad to hear it wasn't worse, although I am sure it seemed like it at the time. Jen Lada is a great part of the Milwaukee sports scene.

  4. Looks like TMJ4's Jessie Garcia is giving every comment a thumbs down (shakes fist angrily in the direction of Capitol Drive and Humboldt).

  5. Why would someone be giving these responses a thumbs down.

  6. I do agree with others, the best sportscaster to fixate your eyes on!!!!! But, a cardinal sin of a cyclist, you don't look over your shoulder, cuz when you do, your bike turns the direction that you look.

I wish a very speedy recovery, we need her on TV, afterall this is Wisconsin, we need something to look at!!!

  10. "Part of the reason I am leary about a bike lane on the Hoan. " Because bikes are capable of crashing? Why even let cars go on it then?

Nightmares? Drama queen or over-the-top-hype reporter?

You took a spill on a bike path and were hit by another bike ... not a bike and car accident on a major roadway.

Sorry you got hurt and congratulations on getting some attention for yourself.

  12. CombatBlogger - I contacted Lada to talk about the crash. She didn't seek the attention - at least not from me.
Perhaps the greater emphasis should have been placed (by me) on the helmet, and how important that appears to have been in avoiding more serious injuries.
