Cyclist hit by car, killed while riding in Muskego

cycling, fatalities

A 66-year-old man from Cedarburg was hit by a car and killed while riding a bicycle on Muskego Dam Rd. shortly before noon on Friday, according to the Muskego Police Department.

The initial release did not include the name of the victim, who is the first cyclist killed by a motor vehicle in 2011. Last year, 10 people were killed in collisions involving bikes and cars, and there were 11 such fatalities in 2009.

Police reported the driver was a 95-year-old man from Franklin, but few other details about the circumstances.

  1. I am sure there are exceptions, but I can't think of any 95 year old that should be driving a car anymore. I understand we have no idea who was at fault here, but getting and keeping a drivers license in this country is way too easy.

  2. I think, at this time, the 95 year old driver needs to stop driving. I don't care how narrow the road is. Motor vehicle drivers should never rear-end another vehicle or person on the road. And looking at google maps, the road is E-W so sun at noon isn't an issue.

  3. 95 year old driver? Get off the road. Makes me never want to leave my house

  4. That is a narrow road where drivers of all abilities drive way too fast. I'm sure that's not the first serious crash on that death trap, and probably not the last. As much of a temptation that short cut is, please, don't ride on that road!

  5. I agree a 95 years old should not drive (he may ride a bike). But the almost total lack of public transportation in this part of the country leaves little alternative.

To which part of the country are you referring? Muskego? Milwaukee County has an adequate transit system. They're called buses, and they're all over. Blaming the lack of public transportation in rural Muskego is missing the point by a mile.

  7. >To which part of the country are you referring?
Almost any in the midwest. The coasts are a bit better but still a far cry from being decent.
    > They're called buses, and they're all over.

Not at all. You cannot call this a state-of-the art public transport system. They go rarely, they are dependent on the other traffic (almost no fast lines for busses, of course not subway or train for connection to suburbs) and therefore are terribly slow.
    >Blaming the lack of public transportation in rural Muskego is missing the point by a mile.
Why is that? Why rural communities should not be connected to the cities and surrounding villages by decent public transport like in almost any other part of the world?
Anyway, this is not about public transport here. I just feel sorry for 95 years old who have almost no other chance moving around other than driving their way-to-huge old cars where they barely can look over the steering wheel. They ARE scarey, I had a few barely misses on my bike with those as well.

  8. Just terribly sad and totally unecessary. Tax paying citizens like myself and others who don't want to rely on cars should be given a comparable alternative. I will bike ANYWHERE, but once you leave Milwaukee county, the bike trails disappear. Why should I have to contend with a 3k lb weapon in the wrong hands just to get to my destiniation? I PAY my taxes and unfortunately (fortunately) the Bike Federation of WI didn't contribute any money to Walker's campaign, so we bikers continue to be maligned
