Lakefront Marathon plans to honor MU grad killed in Texas

running, Lakefront Marathon

Lakefront Marathon organizers plan to honor Scott Birk, a Waukesha native who was registered to run the race in October but was killed Monday while training near his home in Austin, Texas.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Birk was hit by a Dodge Durango while attempting to cross a street. The vehicle reportedly had a green light and no charges are expected.

A 1985 graduate of Marquette University, Birk moved to Austin in 1990 and established himself as one of the area's top master's division runners.

"I just think one of the truly great guys in the running community is gone, and he'll be missed," John Conley, race director of the LiveStrong Austin Marathon, told the Statesman.

  1. This was the quote from Bob Wishnia on the Runtex site: "Scott Birk, who was killed in a tragic accident while running in June, was from Milwaukee and had registered for this year’s running of the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. A group of his training buddies decided a fitting tribute to Scott would be to run this year’s race (on October 2) in his honor. Even though the race reached its cap of 3050 in April, Birk’s friends, including Jesse Devlyn and Jorge Martinez, figured that shouldn’t be a problem getting in. Big problem. This is a little hard for me to believe, but the race director—Kristine Hinrichs—told them the race was closed and that was that. Devlyn countered with a willingness to pay the entry fee and fly to Milwaukee without a guaranteed spot in the race. But with the understanding that he would get a race number which, for one reason or another, isn’t picked up. No dice. The race director wouldn’t budge. "
