Bike lane crash video rolls to national sensation

cycling

Casey Neistat's ticket for NOT biking in the bike lane cost him $50.

The video he produced to protest the fine has earned him a fortune in fame.

A filmmaker living in New York, Neistat went about bashing himself into obstacles in bike lanes all over the city, ending with a pratfall into a police squad car. More than 1 million viewers have clicked on his work and the story has been picked up by The Associated Press and news outlets across the country.

Wisconsin law requires bicyclists to ride as far to the right as practicable, but does not require use of a bike lane if one is available.

  1. Hilarious! Go Casey and thanks for your great work. Maybe someday we'll have bike friendly cities (and drivers)...

  3. Too funny, too TRUE! Construction equipment, commercial vehicles, double parked cars, etc...are all FAR too common in bike lanes. Hey people, get your BS out of my lane.

  7. What a dumbo. If one of the crashes sent him to the emergency room, would he produce a video on why he had to wait his turn in the ER? The officer did not arrest him while he was going around an obstacle. This ahole told the officer, "I'm doing the world a favor by riding my bicycle." That tells you who you are dealing with.

  9. Idiot. I guess we don't need to shell out any tax dollars for bike lanes then,
if bikers aren't gonna use them?
There are plenty of obstacles in roadways too... should car drivers just
crash into them to prove a point?

  10. When NORMAL people want to bring attention to illegally parked vehicles they call the police, not crash into the vehicle. If you do choose to crash into an illegally parked vehicle on purpose I would recommend a Mack truck instead of a Schwinn. A helmet would do no good in this case, apparently the damage has already been done.

  11. Obviously some people here have never been on a bike in a city. It's
like a game of Frogger and anyone that makes it more dangerous or
difficult for a cyclist should not be allowed to reproduce.

It was my understanding that cyclists could take up a whole lane if they
wanted to, but I guess that's not the case in New York.

How people can be so anti-bicycle is beyond me...

  12. Interesting video. My friends in Chicago are constantly telling me about the bicyclists there disregarding the laws by blowing through lights, kicking cars and swearing at automobiles. It is amazing that the bicyclists never think the laws apply to them. They see at least one major bicyclist - motorist fist fight a week and unfortunately way too many bicyclists killed in accidents on the road.

Last week in Brookfield a bicyclist actually stopped for the stoplight. I put my window down and thanked him for actually obeying the law! I guess the only way to encourage good behaviour is to thank those that actually realize the laws of the road apply to them. Thank your law-abiding bicyclist and maybe we will have a saner, harmonious existence!

  13. I'm a biker and also drive a car. I'd love to see the bikers in Brookfield, where I live, use the bike lanes that are available instead of riding in the middle of the road 10 feet from a bike path. It seems like common sense but apparently some bikers lack same.

  14. Please don't get me wrong, 50% of the drivers of automobiles should have their license revoked. But good behaviour goes both ways, so let's give the bicyclists the right lane, use the turn signals on our cars (does anyone use these anymore?), not blow through "yellow, really turning red" lights (one of the biggest causes of bicyclists getting hit in Chicago) and creat an air of civility and respect.
