Bike lane crash video rolls to national sensation

cycling

Casey Neistat's ticket for NOT biking in the bike lane cost him $50.

The video he produced to protest the fine has earned him a fortune in fame.

A filmmaker living in New York, Neistat went about bashing himself into obstacles in bike lanes all over the city, ending with a pratfall into a police squad car. More than 1 million viewers have clicked on his work and the story has been picked up by The Associated Press and news outlets across the country.

Wisconsin law requires bicyclists to ride as far to the right as practicable, but does not require use of a bike lane if one is available.

  1. Pretty idiotic not to wear a helmet while filming that video! As a bicyclist myself, I'll ride in the bike lane when it's there, but out of it if there are obstructions -- and always wear my helmet.

  2. Calm down people. The video was meant to prove a point and thus the coordinated "crashes." If there were as many obstacles in road lanes as there were in bike lanes, you would get the point. Also, bikers have no alternative lane in which to pass said obstruction, the bike lane is what we get, we have to wait for cars which are powered easily by their engines before being able to go into the traffic lanes to get around said obstacle….This is a lot of extra energy spent and for those of you who don't understand kinetics, that means starting/stopping, are more physically demanding/difficult. Not that I'm complaining, I love biking, but NorthWoodsDreaming is totally right on...biking through downtown MKE just to get to work from the eastside, I see people running reds, making 18 pt turns, double parking, illegal u-turns, etc...What might seem like a biker breaking the law....i.e. a rolling stop, is most often in the interest of energy conservation....what excuse do the drivers have when moving is as simple as hitting the gas pedal???

  3. IDIOT .... when trying to convert unbelievers to your cause you must use a reasonable scenario to make your point. I see barricades and traffic cones all the time - should I drive them over to point out this is my right to drive here? If a police car is parked in my loading zone as he is responding to a non-emergency call (no lights/flashers) - should I feel justified in having the squad towed? If you want to convince the uninformed, don't give them ammunication to denounce your arguement.

BTW, I am a biker who rides several days a week and also I have reasonable concerns on the road.

  4. But CombatBlogger his point was that he got a ticket for not riding in the bike lane. Do you see the point that he is trying to make now? If not, it's that you cannot always stay in the bike lane because there are obstacles in the bike lane. The ridiculousness (or in your opinion stupidity) of his gesture is underscoring the irony of the fine.
