Madison City Council looks to cover nudity

cycling

The Madison version of the World Naked Bike Ride, scheduled for June 18, could be forced under cover.

According to this delicately worded story by Chris Rickert, the city council will try on an ordinance banning public nudity when it meets Tuesday night. Rickert reports that the ordinance has nothing to do with the trauma caused by the naked bicyclists last year, but found that the ride organizers are prepared to lobby in opposition.

From the Wisconsin State Journal:  "There is no part of the human body that is obscene, shameful or evil in any way," the person wrote.

That view of the human body was not shared by all who witnessed the nudity on wheels last June.

The Isthmus reviewed police reports to detail the accounts of the aggrieved, including this from a business owner who "had literally just stopped crying" over what she'd witnessed hours before: "multiple nude participants" within view of her daughters, ages 9 and 13. She was so upset she closed her business and canceled her appointments for the day.
