Capitol Drive bike/pedestrian bridge opening set for Memorial Day weekend

trails

Talking to the folks at the Department of Transportation about the construction of the bike / pedestrian bridge over Capitol Drive has given me flashbacks of the Tom Hanks movie "Money Pit."

"Two weeks. Two weeks." It will be done in two weeks.

This time, I'm assured, they really mean it.

The bridge on the Oak Leaf Trail will be open in time for Memorial Day weekend, according to Dennis Shook, a spokesman for the DOT. That would put the opening of the replacement bridge just about 13 months after the demolition of the old span.

Work on the bridge was to be competed in 2010, but the flooding last summer caused delays in the project. Then the weather turned too cold for the concrete to be poured in December, and the chilly spring added to the delay.

Commuters who use the route to bike to work and weekend hikers and bikers have been asking about the status of the bridge regularly.

In place since November, the span looks like it's ready to open, but Shook said landscaping and "ancillary stuff around it" needs to be done.

The bridge project is part of the larger reconstruction of Capitol Drive, in Shorewood, be finished in mid-June.

  1. Wow, that took a long time. Not surprising at all. Almost six months to finish "landscaping and ancillary stuff." Classic.

  3. all gov agencies when signing contracts need to include random alcohol and drug testing for all contracted employees (office to ground workers) to ensure projects that should take 2 months do not take 2 years.
