  1. We can stop this crap from happening with a concealed carry law which can't happen quickly enough for me.

  2. This trail needs to be updated with lights and emergency call boxes.

  3. joggers running around with handguns. why didn't I think of that?

  4. If the crooks are thinking the runners might have a handgun (which might be a bit tought to conceal), I doubt that they will use a knife. So either we scare off the less bold crooks, or they shoot first and look for their take later.

  5. Who's more likely to carry a handgun? A jogger or a guy waiting to mug a jogger?

I'm not saying concealed carry is a bad thing, but training and background checks should be mandatory for those wanting to carry weapons.

  6. That guy's got a lot of balls to pull off that during the day, I hope they catch him

  7. If criminals think twice about shooting someone who may be packing heat, why does most of the city's crime happen where there are the most guns? How many times do you see people getting shot/stabbed on the Oak Leaf Trail versus how many you see happening on the North/West side?

Hopefully this Bayside man recovers soon and can get back to normal life at a relatively quick pace. I would assume being on the Oak Leaf trail that he was living an active lifestyle and, particularly this time of year, being bed ridden is extremely aggravating.

  9. The man was stabbed. Shouldn't we ban knives?

  10. Since anybody can carry a gun openly right now, the typical concealed-
carry arguments are meaningless, unless the inconvenience of carrying a
gun over a shirt instead of under is your tipping point. In fact, since you
can't open carry in a car, I would think that some of the irrational crime-
fearing pistol packers might even be more attracted to riding a bike
    instead of in a car.

And even if I had my gun, in some people's weird fantasy superhero
vision, I wouldn't shoot anybody dead who wants my stupid cell phone.
Back in the real world, many of us cyclists and runners are out there
enjoying the freedom of being outside. Fearfully carrying a gun on a nice
summer day when I don't even carry a shirt or more than $2 isn't a
    lifestyle I'm interested in.

Best wishes for the recovery of the victim.

  11. I've bicycled thousands of miles on the Oak Leaf Trail and can't remember ever seeing a single police officer. That should probably change, especially in the Prospect/North Ave/Capitol Drive area. It's a pretty isolated area. I'm surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.

  12. I hope the cyclist recovers fully and the cops get the guy who did the
stabbing. At the risk of throwing myself into the gun rights debate I would
think that openly wearing a gun would have been a more effective
deterrent here than a concealed weapon.

Maybe I'm missing something but I really do not see any real value in
concealed carry. If the point is to deter crime and NOT to actually use
the gun why not wear the gun out in the open so you avoid the conflict
    in the first place?

If you want to conceal the gun doesn't that sort of suggest that at some
level you want there to be a conflict so that you can use the gun?

And from a practical point of view, I would think that a holster would
really chafe a lot if you are running. skating or cycling.
