  1. The man was very likely mentally ill. A gun would not have mattered,
other than the fact that victim may have been able to shoot him (or accidentally get shot himself, remember the guy is likely mentally ill). I
don't see how a gun would have changed much, other than producing
some other, really much worse outcomes.

This area is a safe area, I'm through there most every day of my life.
Some homeless people to hang around there because there's lots of
places for them to hide out and sleep. More police presence is good but
I'm not sure how much time they would be expected to clear out
homeless people from all the different spots they can hide along that
route. I doubt that's any type of priority for our police force. It shouldn't
    be.

  2. I've biked that stretch from time to time, sometimes long after sunset when I had little company. 30 years ago there were problems kids (like my son) losing bikes to bullying thieves, that kind of thing. The gun is a more recent idea for that stretch, something the NRA wants because their benefactors, the gun manufacturers want to sell more guns.

I won't give up my activities at the behest of the gun industry. They are just another corporation with an agenda that does not consider my needs. I do not want to buy beg or get their "protection" from their racket.
