Team Extreme has room for more in weekend bike camp

cycling, racing

Team Extreme has space available for the third edition of its weekend bike camp geared to help beginner and intermediate riders build their race skills.

The clinics and training sessions will be held Friday and Saturday, based at the Country Inn and Suites in Germantown. The price is $130, and includes the tips from former pros Tom Schuler and Robbie Ventura, meals and plenty of raffle items and schwag.

Jim Giese, a member of the team sponsored by Extreme Bike & Ski in Thiensville, organized the first camp in 2009.

"I committed to do what I can to make the sport safer and to give guys an opportunity to practice their skills," Giese explained. "It's a way to give guys a chance to ease into the racing scene without it being so intimidating their first or second race."

Team Extreme is also committed to providing opportunities for junior riders in the area.

Three of them, Austin Connelly, 12, Isaiah Brody, 19, and Ben Senkerik, 18, will take part in the camp through scholarships provided by masters riders Brian Petted, Bil Koch and Brad Babcock.

"They are all motivated young riders that wrote an essay on their goals for 2011 and beyond," Giese said. "Very ambitious."
