Wrapping up the Flying Pig Marathon's nude runner

running, marathons

Enjoying a respite from the rush of news today, I ran through some of the coverage, or lack thereof, about Brett Henderson.

Haven't heard of him?

He's the 35-year-old man from Illinois who was tasered, then arrested for running naked in the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Kudos to the Offthebench writers at NBC sports for their headline, "Nude marathoner stopped when police tase his flying piglet."

The local paper in Urbana chased the story hard and landed the post-race interview, during which Henderson attempted to cover his actions.

"I’ve run in marathons all over the country, and I think I know the running culture pretty well and I know that anything goes on race day," he told the Daily Citizen. "This is something that happens and is tolerated in the running culture, along with runners who sometimes (urinate) or defecate during a race. Shouldn’t that be considered indecent exposure, too, if what I did was indecent? In fact, running naked was encouraged in a marathon I ran in San Francisco, so I don’t know why this was such a big deal."

Maybe it wasn't.

  1. The Answer is: Urinating, Defecating and Nude male runners.

Alex, what are 3 reasons not to go see a Marathon.

  2. I'm not sure where this guy is running but urinating and defecating along the course are not tolerated in any race I've ever been at. That's why organizers have to provide port-a-pots. People do it because they're inconsiderate but they know they're not supposed to.

In fact in the WCA (cycling), the organizers DQ'd a state champion a couple of years ago for peeing in the bushes.
