Skateboarding in paradise. NMU students set Guinness record.

odds & ends

Marquette, Mich., has long been one of my favorite destinations for recreational travels.

The college town on Lake Superior hosts the Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic, the Noquemanon Ski Marathon and is home to the Vierling, a first-rate restaurant/brew pub (blueberries in beer).

On each trip, I've been impressed by the local enthusiasm for outdoor ventures, from paddling to ice climbing.

Somehow, I've missed out on the skateboarding.

Students at Northern Michigan University set a record over the weekend for most participants in a skateboard parade - 341.

The achievement is almost enough to head north and tip a pint in salute.
