Zoo Interchange plan reroutes section of Oak Leaf Trail

Oak Leaf Trail

A small section of the Oak Leaf bike and pedestrian trail would be rerouted in the Underwood Creek Parkway to accommodate a storm water detention pond included in the latest plans for the Zoo Interchange reconstruction.

According to the revised proposal shared at a public hearing Tuesday night, the five-acre pond would be built south of I-94. Officials from the State Department of Transportation said the parkway would be closed at that point, and the trail will be rerouted around the pond.

Based on a limited look at the plans, work to rebuild the state's busiest interchange from 2013 to 2018 will have little other impact on the Oak Leaf. The trail would be closed, however, where it passes through the construction areas, under Highway 45 and under I-94.

The stormwater detention pond on the Oak Leaf Trail is shown in blue on the map above.

  1. There are actually two trails along both sides of that section of the Underwood creek tributary. It would be nice if any future "improvements" would include more connectors between the two bike paths. Hopefully the Hank Aaron trail will also be completed (paved) out to the Oak Leaf just north of I-94 (not shown on your map). That would provide a great east-west link to downtown and points east form the Oak Leaf.

  2. The Potential Storm Water Retention Pond sits smack dab atop perhaps the sorriest section of "pavement" in all of Milwaukee County. I for one will not be sad to see it go.

  3. I was at the meeting and asked an engineer about it. He said the location of the stormwater detention pond was just in that 'general' area. The maps shows it as a placeholder. He told me the road would be closed but there would still be a trail going through there. In the end this will be a big improvement for trail users since the existing pavement is just about the worst in the county.
