A new triathlon will make its debut next year as the first of five events in the also new 2015 Northwoods of Wisconsin Tri-Master Series.

The White Deer Triathlon – which will include 3K of kayaking, canoeing or standup paddleboarding on Boulder Lake, a 23K road bike ride and a 6.5K run on rustic roads and wooded trails – will be held in Boulder Junction on May 16, 2015.

The White Deer Triathlon will join four other events in the 2015 Northwoods of Wisconsin (NOW) Tri-Master Series, a group of triathlons held in Vilas, Oneida and Langlade counties, from May through September.

The 2015 NOW Tri-Master Series schedule is as follows:

May 16: WHITE DEER TRIALTHLON, Boulder Junction

July 4: JUST TRI IT TRIATHLON, Just TRI It Triathlon, Manitowish Waters

Aug. 8: SEE ME TRI TRIATHLON, Minocqua

Aug. 29: W.I.L.D. HODAG MINI TRI, Rhinelander

Sept. 5: WOLFMAN TRIATHLON, White Lake

The White Deer Triathlon will join the Wolfman Triathlon as the only events in the NOW Tri-Master Series to include a paddling component instead of swimming.

“That not only means people don’t have to swim in still-cold Northwoods lakes in May,” said Theresa Smith, director of the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce, “it also provides a unique spin on what a traditional triathlon offers.”

Triathlon weekend in Boulder Junction will include a cookout lunch and party on Saturday, and opportunities to explore the area’s many public trails and waterways on Sunday.

Registration for the White Deer Triathlon will open October 1, 2014. To receive email updates about the triathlon, go to www.whitedeertriathlon.com.

Registration for the NOW Tri-Master Series will open this fall and is $10 per person in addition to the entry fees for the individual triathlons. This is a one-time fee of $10 regardless of how many triathlons racers enter.

Any participant who completes at least three triathlons will qualify for a NOW Tri-Master Medal. Trophies will be awarded to the top male, top female and top team. The series will be based on a point system that takes into account standings and the number of triathlons entered, so the more triathlons people participate in, the more points they accumulate. Awards will be presented following the Wolfman Triathlon.
