Need a goal? Something to do? Start with our new events calendar
by Joel Patenaude
If you’re a regular visitor to Silent Sports’ website, thank you. You probably noticed the design makeover we implemented on November 1. And if you’re a newcomer, welcome.
Whichever camp you’re in, you’re in luck. We’re excited to showcase the cleaner format and more mobile friendly features of silentsports.net.
Our Silent Sports Events Calendar is substantially improved, which we’ll focus on here. The calendar can be viewed by month, week or day of your choosing. And the events can be displayed as a list and searched by sport and state.
Furthermore, by utilizing Google Maps, you can see where all the events are held in relation to your own location.
We encourage you to play with the calendar tool. Start on the Silent Sports Events Calendar page here. Click on “Show Filters” on the top left. From there you can select one or more sport categories (cycling, running, paddling, multisport, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and other activities) and one or more state within our region of the upper Midwest (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Ontario, Canada). Then scroll down to see the results.
2015-2016 Upper Midwest ski races now online
The calendar is currently flush with 2015-2016 cross-country ski races. The same events will appear in the December print edition of Silent Sports, delivered to your doorstep and newsstands by December 1. So, by searching our online calendar now, you’ll have a leg up on planning your ski racing season. Snowshoeing events, both candlelight hikes and races, are coming so keep checking back.
In fact, that’s a good reminder: The Silent Sports Events Calendar is an ever expanding thing. Unlike a single issue of the print magazine, which only has space to include three months’ worth of events, the online calendar includes many more events farther out on the horizon. More 2016 events are being added daily.
Submitting events made easier, too
If you’re an event organizer and you haven’t listed your events with us, both on the website and in the magazine, please do. It’s free. And here’s how to do it:
Again, start on the Silent Sports Events Calendar page. Click on “Add an Event” in the upper left corner and fill out the form that pops up. The editor will promptly format your submission and publish it to the website, often the same day.
If you want your event listing to appear in the print magazine, too, make sure to submit it at least three months in advance to ensure it appears in three subsequent issues and for maximum exposure to our interested readers/event participants.
The Silent Sports Events Calendar works better than ever on mobile devices. The images here are, in fact, screenshots of the calendar taken with a smartphone.
So play around with it. And send any feedback you have to firstname.lastname@example.org.
